Charity Camaro auction on Ebay

This comes from CamaroZ28.com:

Last May, 15 Camaro enthusiasts/focus group members who are known as the Camaro Disciples met with Chevrolet Camaro designers, product managers, and marketing managers for a final focus group before 2010 Camaro production at the Milford proving grounds. The goal was to offer final design, engineering, and functionality thoughts and critiques on the upcoming 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. These 15 people helped the Camaro Team shape what is expected to be the best Camaro yet.

During the meeting, each of the 15 Disciples received one 1:64 scale GreenLight/CamaroZ28.Com Series II Camaro Concept Convertible Pace Car die-cast collectible. Each Disciple signed each car, ensuing that all 15 cars had 15 Disciple signatures on it. Then many other members of Chevrolet's Camaro Team signed each car as well. Some of the team members who placed their signatures on the car's packaging include Scott Settlemire, Cheryl Pilcher, John Fitzpatrick, Tom Peters, and more. All 15 cars are currently in the possession of the 15 Camaro disciples...

...except for one special 16th car.

One "Green Machine" version was also signed. A Green Machine is GreenLight's version of the "chase car", or the limited edition of the limited editions. They are widely regarded as being highly sought after, rare, and valuable, but perhaps none are as valuable as this one to the Camaro enthusiast and collector.

Up for auction will be that lone 16th car, a CamaroZ28.Com Series II Camaro Concept Convertible Pace Car Green Machine, signed by all 15 Camaro Disciples as well as very important Camaro Team members. This release of the CamaroZ28.Com Die-Cast series will never be produced again and getting the same signatures on any other item would be extremely difficult if not next to impossible.

This auction will be one chance to own that impossibility and a very unique part of Camaro history.

This auction will include:

  • One CamaroZ28.Com Series II Camaro Concept Convertible Pace Car Green Machine, with signatures
  • Certificate of authenticity, hand signed by the CamaroZ28.Com co-founders
  • One newly released CamaroZ28.Com Series III die-cast collectible (regular version)
  • Additional CamaroZ28.Com items (stickers, member cards, key chains)

100% of the proceeds of this auction will go to Habitat for Humanity International.
Funds will be processed directly through the eBay charity auction system, which is administered by Mission Fish.

Dale Earnhardt and the SEMA Camaro

As many of you have already seen by now, there were a few SEMA show cars in Las Vegas this past week that showcased the new 2010 Camaro. One of those cars was the Dale Earnhardt Jr edition. Checkout the video below that shows the experience Dale Jr had with the Camaro and Team Chevrolet

Stevenson Motorsports to race a new Camaro

Paddocktalk.com is reporting the Stevenson Motorsports team will run a new Chevrolet Camaro in the NONI Challenge Series 2009. The car will be built by Bill Riley Technologies in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Mike Johnson is the team manager for Stevenson Motorsports. "We are genuinely excited about being among the first to race the all new Chevrolet Camaro in KONI Challenge." Johnson said, "Bill Riley is one of the top builders of race cars anywhere and we know that when he delivers chassis number 001 to our team we will already have a head start on the competition."

Custom Camaros at SEMA

LAS VEGAS – Chevrolet introduces a quartet of stunning concepts based on the all-new, 2010 Camaro at the 2008 SEMA Show. The concepts join regular-production and accessorized models, along with a dream collection of vintage Camaros – including rare COPO, Indy Pace Car and early Z28 models – to mark the introduction of Chevy’s re-born sports car. The Camaro is the official car of the 2008 SEMA show.

Each of the concepts represents a different interpretation of the new Camaro’s performance, styling and personalization possibilities, from no-holds-barred high-performance to carefully crafted, street-savvy customizing.

  • Camaro LS7 Concept – the spirit of COPO lives with a GM Performance Parts LS7 crate engine that delivers more than 500 hp

  • Camaro Dale Earnhardt Jr. Concept – customized to Dale Jr.’s style

  • Camaro Black Concept – a sinister-looking exercise in bold design

  • Camaro GS Racecar Concept – an homage to a road racing legend

Camaro: A Legend Reborn

Coming in March 2009, the long awaited book about the ressurection of an American Icon, the Chevrolet Camaro, by Larry Edsall

Amazon has the pre-order available now: Camaro: A Legend Reborn

Our copy is on order! After reading Jim Schefter's All Corvettes Are Red, which discussed the story behind the completely redesigned C5 1997 Chevrolet Corvette, I look forward to this new book with much enthusiasm!

Here is a description of the book:

When Chevrolet entered the pony market in 1967, its Camaro looked like a winner--not just for the muscle car era but for all time. And it was the iconic Camaro, battling Ford’s Mustang for dominance, that once again jumpstarted flagging American performance in the 1980s. Now, after another lull and more missed chances, Chevrolet comes roaring back onto the muscle car scene with a Camaro for a new generation--a Camaro destined to be the next classic.

Camaro: A Legend Reborn chronicles the rebirth of this legendary car. With drawings and photographs of prototypes and pre-productions vehicles, and in interviews with engineers, designers, and key executives, the book follows each step of the process that led to Camaro’s triumphant return. And finally, jaw-dropping photographs of the new car at play on the street and on the track announce the arrival of the ultimate Camaro in no uncertain terms.

Camaro RS hideaway headlamps

This old rendering if a 2010 Camaro RS with hidaway headlamps was posted by a member of www.5thgen.org this week. I love the idea!

I wonder if GM Performance Parts will take something like this on, or maybe the aftermarket will put something together, either would be good to see!

A message from John Fitzpatrick, Camaro Marketing Manager:

The Camaro Marketing Team would like to bring to your attention a unique opportunity to obtain the third Camaro to be produced when regular production starts in February 2009, and help a great college in the Detroit area.

Since that memorable day in January 2006, when the Camaro concept was revealed, one of the most discussed, striking feature of the car has been its looks. A lot of effort was put into the design of this great car. Chevrolet wanted to honor that effort by providing an opportunity to a local Detroit institution - the College for Creative Studies - responsible for the higher education of a number of great GM Designers.

Chevrolet has arranged for the College for Creative Studies (CCS) to purchase the third 2010 Camaro model produced when regular production starts in early 2009 (currently scheduled for February 16, 2009). In turn, CCS will auction this very special model as part of its annual fundraising event.

Starting this evening (Wednesday, October 15, 2008) at 9 p.m. (EDT), CCS will list their Camaro on Ebay Motors. The auction will run until Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 9 p.m. The model is a 2010 Camaro SS featuring 6.2L V8 engine with over 400 horsepower and a GM estimated 23 MPG highway (official EPA ratings will be released closer to the start of production in early 2009).

Link to ebay listing

The winning bidder will have the option of adding factory installed optional equipment and selecting the exterior and interior trim color.

Located in midtown Detroit, the College for Creative Studies is a world leader in art and design education. A private, fully accredited college, CCS enrolls more than 1,300 students pursuing various Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees including Product Design and Transportation Design.Last year, CCS raised $1.4 million with the proceeds for this event underwriting undergraduate scholarships and high-quality art and design education programs to high-risk Detroit Youth.

98 percent of CCS students received some form of financial assistance and over 3,000 Detroit youth participated in CCS's community outreach programs.

If you are interested in attaining the certified third Camaro model produced when regular production starts, you are encouraged to visit http://www.collegeforcreativestudies.edu/diwa/camaro and click on the Ebay link to register and come back at 9 p.m. (EDT) on October 15 to begin bidding.

Auction runs 9 p.m. eastern October 15, 2008 through 9 p.m. eastern October 25, 2008

Please call the College at 313.664.7464 with any questions.Hurry, the auction ends 9:00 p.m. (EDT) Saturday October 25, 2008.

First Drive: 2010 Camaro V6

Car & Driver magazine takes the V6 Camaro through the paces, checkout their article below:

Attention, IROC-Z enthusiasts: the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will not be available with your beloved T-top. If this is hugely disappointing, well, it may finally be time to put on a shirt with a collar, sell your Skynyrd CDs, and scissor the mullet.

In reviving the Camaro, Chevy is doing all it can to make the born-again car remind everyone of the sharp, cleanly styled 1967 original, rather than the more awkward later versions that seemed like accessories to tank-top wear and excesses in facial hair. This writer, the semi-proud owner of a 1995 Z28, knows intimately all the social assumptions that go with late-model Camaro ownership.

GM is of course milking the revival for as many stories as it can get from us, hence we got a first drive in a V-6-powered Camaro prototype, which we promptly piloted to the the Car and Driver 10Best loop in the Michigan woods. The V-8 experience will follow soon. Manipulative intentions aside, the point of our early exposure was also to prove that even the base Camaro is deserving of more enlightened consideration, while still being powerful and capable enough to rock your face.

The Camaro Team seeks your input

Friends of Camaro:

Are you interested in the V6 or V8 engine? Do you seek the direct input of a manual transmission, or are you more comfortable with an automatic transmission? Will the Camaro be the car you drive every day, or just on weekends? When do you plan to purchase your new Camaro?

Now that the wraps have been taken off the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, we would like your feedback on what features are important to you.

By clicking on the link below, you will be sent to a third party site -- www.myproductadvisor.com -- where your answers to various questions are collected and analyzed.

The process is pretty easy, but a little time consuming (plan to spend about 20 minutes answering questions). The site is split into a number of sections from “Auto Usage” to “Recommendations”. These sections are dedicated to general automotive consumer research -- not just sport cars like Camaro but other cars and trucks (for example you’ll be asked questions on truck bed length, four cylinder engines, turning radius, etc.). We suggest you answer the questions on the site as if your mind is set on the Camaro (or like vehicle).

Please start the survey by clicking and answering a question on “Auto Usage.” You have the option of answering all the applicable questions in each section (highly recommended), or just answering one question in “Auto Usage”, and moving directly to “Recommendation” button on the right corner.

In this survey, the “Recommendation” button will not provide an automotive recommendation, but will start the second part of the survey which is dedicated just to Camaro. Once the “Recommendation” button is clicked, a picture of the 2010 Camaro will appear inviting you to link into the Camaro survey. The questions will include option descriptions and price ranges; but please note, these prices are being provided to determine demand, and do not necessarily reflect final Camaro pricing or packaging.

Your answers will go a long way in helping Chevrolet bring the 2010 Camaro to market in the first quarter of 2009.

Thank you for your time in participating in this research event.

422 horsepower--and, uh, easy at the pump

How do you market a 422 horsepower, 23 mpg muscle car in an era of $4-a-gallon gasoline?

By touting the fuel economy.

"We'll be promoting the fuel economy story very much," Ed Peper, Chevrolet's vice president, told reporters last week, showing off the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. "We are two or three mpg ahead of the competition."

The rear-drive Camaro goes into production in February in Oshawa, Ontario. General Motors views the competition as the Ford Mustang, Nissan 350Z, and Dodge Challenger, said Cheryl Pilcher, the Camaro's product manager.

Peper said the 304 horsepower V-6 version will get an estimated 26 mpg, and the 422 horsepower V-8 version will get an estimated 23 mpg. "And we are still working on it," he said. He hinted that a turbo four-cylinder version is in the works.

The price: Not announced.

The volume? "We will build as many as we can sell," Pilcher said.

Camaro Named Official Vehicle of 2008 SEMA Show

DIAMOND BAR, CA--(Marketwire - June 17, 2008) - The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, a true 21st century sports car, will be the official vehicle of the 2008 SEMA Show.

Held Tuesday-Friday, Nov. 4-7, 2008, in Las Vegas, NV, the SEMA Show is the world's leading automotive accessories trade show.

"The influence that the Camaro has had on the automotive industry and vehicle personalization is undeniable," said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA VP of events and communications. "Since the car was introduced in 1967, enthusiasts have fallen in love with the Camaro. It's simply a great example of the passion and excitement that comes from this industry."

After 35 years of continuous production, the Camaro was taken off the assembly line in 2002. Chevrolet introduced a concept version of the popular vehicle in early 2006, announcing later that year that a new generation of the Camaro would be forthcoming. That vehicle is set to debut in 2009.

Another car to be built at Oshawa?

Source: Reuters

DETROIT, June 6 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp ( said on Friday it was in very early discussions with the Canadian Auto Workers union about adding another model to its car plant in Oshawa, Ontario, after deciding to close a nearby truck plant.

The discussions about a potential third car for the Oshawa car production line, earmarked to make the Chevrolet Camaro and a still unnamed second car, began this week after GM announced it was closing its truck plant in Oshawa, said Stew Low, a spokesman for GM Canada.

The CAW has protested GM's decision to close the Oshawa truck plant in 2009, saying it violates a just-ratified labor contract. CAW President Buzz Hargrove and GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner met on Friday at GM's headquarters in Detroit. (Reporting by Soyoung Kim and Kevin Krolicki; editing by John Wallace)

This week it seems someone with access to the Oshawa Assembly plant took a few pictures of a certain body of a certain car. I'm sure there will be some investigation into this one.

5GO test drives the new Camaro

5thgen.org had a chance to participate in the GM Camaro focus group yesterday at the GM Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan. As the participant posts "While my personal preference remains the V8 model, you will not be disappointed by the V6 model in appearance or performance – the V6 car will be a total sleeper!"

Latest interior pictures posted

LeftLaneNews.com posted some recent images of a black Camaro. There are two good interior shots through the door glass. Not much new here, just something to hold us over until we get more dirt on the Camaro.

More than likely this is one of the cars we have already seen a few times.

Build your own 5th gen Penske Camaro

scaleautomag.com posted this great write up on how you can make your very own Penske themed 2010 Camaro coupe. I know I've always wanted to make scale model cars, but since I was a teenager, just haven't taken the time to do it properly. I can always appreciate the work involved in a model like this one.

Check out the link below to see the well documented steps and photographs to go along with them.

An inside look into developing the Camaro

GM has updated their Camaro information site. Some good reading material, here is a sample.

Phase 1: The Team And Testing

As we continue to move forward, now is a great time to look back at some of the key milestones in the development of the highly-anticipated fifth-generation Camaro.

Building the Right Team!!!

The key to developing a great vehicle is teamwork. We need very passionate people who will do whatever it takes to blend the right Powertrains & Chassis, Body & Interior, and HVAC & Electrical systems together with excellent Vehicle Performance & Integration.

Camaro from GM's best styling era was so good it lasted 12 years

Many who are waiting for the revived 2009 Chevrolet Camaro remember the 1968-69 Camaro Z-28, which was basically a Trans Am race car anyone could buy at a Chevy dealership. But its race engine wasn't very suitable for street driving, and I found that the car -- as with all race cars -- was generally uncomfortable.

The new 1970-73 Camaro, which also came as a high-performance Z-28 model, was much better. For one thing, it was comfortable. For another, it was gorgeous. The 1967 Camaro had bland styling, while the chunkier 1968-69 Camaro looked almost trucklike.

The exquisitely styled 1970 Camaro coupe came from the best era of General Motors styling, done under legendary GM styling chief Bill Mitchell. It resembled the fabulous Pininfarina-styled short-wheelbase Ferrari Berlinetta, with a small, high-set ovalish grille, long hood, short deck, pointing front fenders -- and trim and tapered rear fenders. It looked like a Ferrari for Americans.

Think the classic American muscle car is dead?

Chrysler started the production launch of the all new Dodge Challenger yesterday at the Brampton Assembly Plant . Just in time for $4.00 per gallon fuel prices here in the US. At $37,995 MSRP, all 7,000 of the 2008 SRT8 versions of the Challenger are already spoken for, with orders coming in already for 2009 models.

"Even though the development time for this Dodge Challenger SRT8 is one of the shortest in Chrysler's history, the wait for this exciting car has been too long, and as of today, the wait is finally over!" said Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President - Manufacturing. "Dodge Challenger represents the best of Chrysler's past and future. The teams that worked to bring this vehicle to market with quality and speed have done an excellent job."

It will be interesting to watch sales since the Ford Mustang has seen a decline already in 2008 with April 2008 sales down 19.7% compared to April 2007, the economy down and rising fuel prices, will the Camaro be more late to the party than it already is? Time will tell.

CAW wants more work at GM plants, or no deal

The union, which represents about 13,000 GM workers, is looking for long-term transmission work at the Windsor operation, extra parts output at plants in St. Catharines and additional models at a new flexible manufacturing complex in Oshawa.

GM will build the Camaro sports car at the Oshawa complex but has not identified any other models for production.

The company expects the Camaro to generate significant demand, but the complex needs other cars to justify its huge investment.

In recent months, local union officials have said they fear GM will use commitments for any further models in Oshawa as a bargaining chip in talks.

2009 Challenger SRT-8 in the driveway

A writer for Automobile Magazine took home a 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 the other day.

"I’ll be pretty surprised if the new Camaro doesn’t beat the Challenger in just about every realm, but most proud Mopar nuts will probably love this car despite its faults."

Camaro is a 'Gotta have car'

Accoring to Motor Trend magazine, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is a Gotta have car!

Of the American Big Three's trio of "retro" ponycars-Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and Chevrolet Camaro-it's the still-forthcoming 2010 Chevy that's the four-wheeled Paris Hilton, the car swarmed by the loudest buzz and blinded by the most paparazzi strobes.

Sure, magazine covers exploded with Mustangs when Ford unveiled its sensational, fifth-generation model for 2005, but the Mustang, like the rotation of the earth, is a constant, a familiar face ever since its debut in 1964. And the new-for-2008 Challenger, a great-looking piece that conjures images of the iconic star car from 1971's "Vanishing Point," is inspired by a nameplate that served only eight interrupted years in production; compared with its two pony rivals, it's nearly a niche model.
