Chevrolet Camaro Ute from down under

Not satisfied with the norm, Victoria, Australia's Luke Bromidge spent months creating a kit that will transform any Holden VE Commodore into a unique Camaro.

Personally, I think the conversion is just getting started. I'd shave the side fender ornaments and Ute tails. I'd integrate some type of tail lamps in the tailgate to better emulate the Camaro look.

What do you think?

The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

  • On sale in February 2011
  • Well-tailored fabric top
  • Acoustical headliner for quietness and easy-to-use single latch
  • Robust, reinforced structure supports a sports coupe-like driving experience
  • Better torsional stiffness than BMW 3-Series convertible

The segment-leading Chevrolet Camaro opens a new chapter as the 2011 Camaro convertible premieres at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The new convertible begins production in January and goes on sale in February. It includes an enhanced body structure and well-tailored top mechanism – a combination designed to deliver sports coupe-like driving fun and precise quality.

“The launch of the new convertible opens Camaro design and performance to a new set of potential customers,” said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “The 21st century revival of Camaro is tremendously popular, so it’s a natural to now expand and elevate the product range in new directions.”

The convertible will be offered in similar model configurations as the Camaro coupe. The standard model will have a 312-horsepower direct injection V-6 engine delivering 29 mpg highway. The SS model will feature the 6.2L V-8 engine producing 426 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic.

Camaro seized leadership in U.S. sales in its segment with the original coupe model that launched in spring 2009 as a 2010 model. The right to purchase one of the first convertibles was recently sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction for $205,000, with all proceeds donated to charity. The 2011 Neiman Marcus Edition Camaro convertibles, a group of 100 exclusive cars with custom-designed elements and priced at $75,000 each, sold out in only three minutes.

The Camaro convertible delivers great refinement, along with uncompromising, coupe-like driving dynamics. Its enhanced body structure helps prevent cowl or steering wheel shake, for a strong, confident feel in all driving conditions. The top has a smooth, tailored fit, with acoustical foam in the headliner that helps deliver a quiet ride with the top up.

Camaro convertible is offered in 1LT/2LT (V-6) and 1SS/2SS (V-8) trim packages and priced from $30,000 MSRP (including $850 destination). Nine production exterior colors are available, with tops offered in black or tan. Rear parking assist is standard on all convertible models.

Strong structure

The Camaro’s architecture was designed to accommodate a convertible model, which means customers enjoy the fun of top-down cruising with coupe-like driving dynamics. Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure to eliminate common convertible maladies of cowl and steering wheel shake. They include:

A tower-to-tower brace under the hood
A transmission support reinforcement brace
Underbody tunnel brace
Front and rear underbody “V” braces.
“Our goal in development was to make the convertible match the coupe as closely as possible in ride quality, handling and overall performance,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.

A telling example of the Camaro convertible’s strength is evidenced in its suspension tuning – specifically, the lack of changes between the convertible and coupe models.

“To compensate for the reduced structure of an open car, engineers often will make the suspension softer, making the convertible a boulevard cruiser,” said Oppenheiser. “Instead, we took the more difficult, but better path of bolstering structure rather than softening the suspension. We didn’t change a strut, bushing or spring rate from the Camaro coupe.”

The result is a convertible that preserves nearly all the acceleration, road-holding and performance capabilities of the Camaro coupe.

Additional safety structural reinforcements are designed to improve noise and vibration characteristics, while also contributing to the elimination of cowl/steering wheel shake. They include a hydrofromed tube in the A-pillars, an inner reinforcement bracket in the windshield header, a reinforced front hinge pillar and reinforcements inside the rockers.

The structural changes to the Camaro convertible body give it superior bending and torsional stiffness than its closest competitor, and better torsional stiffness than the BMW 3-Series convertible.

Exceptional top refinement

At the outset, designers and engineers sought to eliminate the common appearance of convertible top support ribs and they succeeded, using composite knuckles rather than aluminum ones, as well as extending the top material below the belt line and revising the top’s stitch lines. The result is a top that has a smooth, taut and carefully tailored appearance that also retains the sleek roofline of the coupe.

The power-folding top retracts in about 20 seconds. It is built in partnership with the same manufacturer as the Corvette convertible top, and operates in a similar manner. That means it folds in a simple “Z” pattern and latches with a single, convenient handle located at the center of the windshield header. Other convertible models in this segment still offer convertible tops with dual latches, forcing drivers into two-hand operations reaching across the car.

Once the latch is turned to the open position, the push of a single button lowers the windows and activates the top. The car doesn’t have to be parked for the top to be activated, allowing for spur-of-the-moment lowering while stopped at a stoplight.

The top is made of thick, durable canvas and it features acoustical headliner material that provides a quiet, coupe-like ride when the top is up. It also incorporates a glass rear window and rear window defogger.

A folding, one-piece tonneau cover is standard on 2LT and 2SS models and optional on 1LT/1SS. It covers the folded top for a finished appearance. An accessory windscreen is available from Chevrolet dealers. It installs behind the front seats to limit wind buffeting when driving with the top down.

Performance

Camaro LT convertible models are offered with a 3.6L direct injection (DI) V-6 that delivers more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. It is rated at 312 horsepower (232 kW) and 278 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). Peak fuel economy with the direct injection V-6 is 29 miles per gallon on the highway.

Two 6.2L V-8 engines are offered in Camaro SS models, including the L99 on automatic-equipped vehicles and the LS3 on manual-equipped models. Both engines are derived from the LS3 that debuted on the 2008 Corvette, with an aluminum block (with cast iron cylinder liners) and aluminum cylinder heads. Horsepower for the L99 is 400 (298 kW) and torque is 410 lb.-ft. (556 Nm). The LS3 develops 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. (569 Nm).

The L99 features the fuel-saving Active Fuel Management System, which saves fuel by shutting down half of the engine’s cylinders during certain light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising.

All Camaro models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The Aisin AY6 six-speed manual is standard with the 3.6L engine, and a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic is optional. A Tremec TR 6060 six-speed manual is standard on the SS, and the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic is optional.

Additional details

A myriad of fine details distinguish Camaro convertible models, including:

The OnStar/XM/AM-FM radio antenna moves to the deck lid on LT models without the RS package
The radio antenna is embedded in the rear spoiler on RS-equipped LT and SS models
The trunk lock cylinder is moved to the rear seat area for a cleaner exterior appearance
A new subwoofer design is located in the trunk between the rear seats.
Because the combined OnStar/XM/AM-FM radio antenna is mounted on the roof of coupe models, it had to be relocated on the convertible. On RS-equipped LT models and SS models, which include a rear spoiler, a small “shark fin” OnStar/XM antenna is mounted on the deck lid, while the AM/FM radio antenna is hidden inside the rear spoiler. This patent-pending design creates a sleeker appearance. For LT models without a rear spoiler (without the RS package), the combined antenna is located in the center of the deck lid.

The relocation of the trunk lock cylinder also cleans up the Camaro convertible’s appearance, moving from the panel between the taillamps to a discreet area between the rear seat back cushion and driver’s side interior panel. The change retains full, lockable access to the trunk, with the keyless remote fob also offering easy trunk access.

Finally, the subwoofer – either an eight-inch unit with the base sound system or a 10-inch subwoofer with the available Boston Acoustics system – is relocated from the trunk to an area between the rear seat cushions.

The F5 Trans Am Appearance Package

This team of people former Tier 1 automotive supplier never lost sight of their passion, cars.

Four new packages for the 2011 Camaro

Dan Fritter from The Car Guide brings us the following article:

The SEMA show is always a favourite of the musclecar crowd. Be it old or new, shops and manufacturers alike can’t help but use the massive Las Vegas convention centre as a showcase for their most modified machines. And for Chevrolet, that means bringing a whole passel of Camaros. The first, and easily most show-worthy of cars brought by the Bow Tie brand is fittingly named the Red Flash Show Car. Going against the grain of matte finishes and stealthy designs, the car boasts a flamboyant red paint scheme with a matching body kit, offset by grey full-length racing stripes. Boasting an aftermarket intake and exhaust, it’s audible volume should match its visual volume.

The second and third, as production models, are slightly more low key, but both boast an interesting front end package that should soon be appearing on the Camaro’s options list. In blue and powered by the company’s 3.6 litre direct injection V6 is the XM/Accessory Appearance Package, while the graphite car replaces last years’ Synergy Green model. Planning to introduce a new Synergy model with each passing year, Chevy intends to differentiate the Synergy Camaro’s with a variety of exterior and interior colours and appearance packages that will not be available on any other Camaro.

Which brings us to the fourth, and easily most interesting Camaro. Speaking of unavailable, the SSX is Chevrolet’s answer to Ford’s FR500 program that puts factory prepared Mustang race cars in the hands of privateers all over the continent, and boasts more than a few conceptual parts that may (or may not) make it into production. Gratuitious use of carbon fibre throughout, the removal such comforts as sound deadener, the radio, carpet, and the rear seats makes this the lightest of Camaros, while new heads, a dry sump oiling system, and a bigger camshaft put the naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8’s output at a lofty 524 horsepower. And although there’s little doubt that the SCCA-spec cage won’t be appearing on option lists any time soon, one can’t help but wonder if this track ready Camaro might possess a few hints at the upcoming Z28.

Camaro named HOTTEST car at SEMA

LAS VEGAS - November 3, 2010 - The Chevrolet Camaro has been named the “hottest car” at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The inaugural SEMA Award recognizes the most accessory-friendly new models, based on the number of vehicles exhibited at the show.

“A booth space is a ballot, and the models these exhibitors have selected represent their vote,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO.

According to SEMA, exhibitors manufacture thousands of products that improve performance, convenience, appearance and comfort. While products are available for every make and model vehicle, exhibitors are investing more into the Chevrolet Camaro than any other car. Consumers, therefore, can expect to find more options for personalizing their Camaro.

“More than any other venue, the cars exhibitors and attendees bring to SEMA embody the passion and excitement of car enthusiasts everywhere,” said John Fitzpatrick, Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager. “Based on the sheer number of Camaros displayed on the floor, and parked in the adjacent lots, the Camaro is clearly the hottest car of the show.”

DC Police SUV hits Bumblebee during Transformer 3 filming

WASHINGTON - A D.C. Police SUV was involved in a wreck at the filming of Transformers 3 in Washington D.C.

While the movie was filming a car chase scene on 3rd Street and Maryland Ave in southwest D.C., the police SUV collides with a yellow Chevy Camaro, which in the movie series is known as the character Bumblebee.

The police SUV was not supposed to be there and the wreck itself was not scripted.

The police officer driving the SUV is a veteran bomb technician. He was taken to a local hospital and sustained minor injuries.

Sources tell FOX 5 that he was running to a call to 9th and F Street and was apparently using a different radio channel than the police officers who were securing the perimeter for the movie.

2012 Camaro to get new tail lamps and side mirrors?

An alert photographer captured what is believed to be a Camaro featuring a new style of rear LED tail lamps and side view mirrors.  Personally I'd stick with the 2010-2011 tails and mirrors.

The tail lamps look like something out of a JC Whitney catalog and the mirrors look like an old truck with big chrome bolt on trailer mirrors on each side. If dumbo was a Camaro...

As much as we know a mild facelift is coming soon, lets hope these are only test parts on this particular Camaro.

MotorTrend has some other great shots of this car.

Hennessey goes topless in the LS9 Camaro

Only 24 lucky buyers will get their hands on a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro with the Hennessey HPE700 LS9 treatment. They will be a mix of hardtop and convertible models.

These are not ordinary tuned Camaros. Hennessey has a rich history of tuning factory performance cars and these will have a 755 horsepower version of the LS9 motor currently available in the Corvette ZR1.  According to Hennessey, the HPE700 Camaro will do 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and the quarter mile in 10.9 seconds at 130 mph, impressive!

SLP revives the Camaro ZL1

The 1969 Camaro ZL-1 may very well be one of the most sought after Camaros ever built. Chevrolet built 69 1969 Camaros with the ZL-1 package, a street legal weapon powered by a 427 Big Block motor, factory exhaust and tires and a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty!  These cars could blow through the 1320 in 13 seconds.

Fast forward to 2011, SLP who is no stranger to Camaros, announced they will offer a ZL1 package on the 2011 Camaro SS!  Their ad below states they plan to create 69 (coincidence?) and they should have 750 horsepower packed under the hood.  We can't wait for these to hit the pavement!

See it live at the debut in Anaheim, California at the OC Auto Show this weekend, October 7-11, 2010.

Introducing the Neiman Marcus edition Camaro convertible

Today in Dallas, Texas, Neiman Marcus unveiled their 2010 Holiday Catalog. The Neiman Marcus catalog is world renown for their luxurious, high-end, and special holiday gifts. Over the last ten years, the catalog has featured some of the rarest, most unique automobiles ever created and sold. Never has a Chevrolet model been offered for sale in their catalog – until now.

Chevrolet is pleased to announce we have teamed up with Neiman Marcus to create the 2011 Neiman Marcus Edition Camaro Convertible. This special edition convertible model -- based off of the Camaro 2SS – features such unique characteristics as Deep Bordeaux Tri-Coat exterior color with painted rally stripes; 21” wheels, that look similar to those on the Camaro convertible concept car, with red flare accent; and Amber leather-appointed interior with red flare accent stitching. A hero card with an image of this model is attached for reference.

The car is painted Deep Bordeaux and comes with subtle rally stripes. The interior is amber leather offset by black leather side panels and red stitching. That's cool, but even cooler is the power beneath the hood: The Neiman Marcus Camaro Convertibles are equipped with a 6.2-liter, V-8 engine. When paired with six-speed manual transmission, the engine delivers 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Only 100 of these unique Camaro Convertible models will be offered for sale on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. Camaro convertible shows up on Glee

An alert member of Modern Camaro posted about what looks like some GM product placement in the hit FOX TV show 'Glee' last night. While he claims his wife was the one watching the show, we won't hold it against him. During one scene, there is a blue Camaro convertible with black wheels in the background as clear as day. Looks like the Grabber Blue found on the current Ford Mustang.  Personally, I think the car looks great in that color, then again so does the Mustang.

Is this car a GM prototype?  Aftermarket? Who knows, but as this much anticipated car gets closer to production, I expect more promotion like this from GM.  Nothing like working to make a great thing better!

Here are some stills from the show.

Camaro GT4 debuts at Nürburgring

A fine example of the Chevrolet Camaro on the track! We found this posted on ModernCamaro.com this week.

Early this year, the successful Dutch motorsport entrepreneur decided to bring the Chevrolet Camaro to GT4 regulations, built by Riley Motorsport Technologies in Mooresville, North Carolina, to Europe. Soon after that, Verschuur announced his intention to enter two Camaros under the banner of his own team for the HTC Dutch GT4 Championship, the highest motor racing category in The Netherlands. The fact that it took longer than planned for the cars to make their race debut is also the result of Verschuur’s philosophy, which already helped him score many victories, among others in the Le Mans 24 Hours and various European Renault one-make competitions. “There is no use racing the car when it doesn’t fully suit our requirements. First, we wanted to adapt the Camaro to European standards, and only go racing when we were fully satisfied”, Verschuur explained.

The UFC Camaro (Lot #392) will cross the Barrett-Jackson block during prime time at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and will be driven by none other than UFC Hall of Famer Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell. The winning bidder will bring home a UFC limited-edition Camaro that features a supercharged, 650 horsepower engine, custom exhaust, lowering suspension kit, 2000-watt sound system, custom paint and UFC fight glove seats with suede headliner.

SPEED television will carry the UFC Camaro Auction live on Sept. 24.

Proceeds raised at the UFC Camaro auction will benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing support for the families of United States military personnel injured or lost in performance of their duty. Likewise, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund works to assist our wounded warriors by providing facilities and services that ensure that injured military personnel receive the best possible treatment our nation has to offer.

These privately-funded facilities include the Center for the Intrepid, a state-of-the-art physical rehabilitation facility at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas that provides those with severe extremity injuries, severe burns and amputees the best opportunity to regain their ability to live and work productively; and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) in Bethesda, Maryland, a $65 million, 72,000 sq. ft., advanced center dedicated to the diagnosis and clinical care of service members suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), post traumatic stress (PTS) and other complex psychological health issues.

“We are excited that we can help raise money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund by auctioning off the UFC Camaro at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event,” UFC President Dana White said. “We appreciate the sacrifices the men and women of our armed forces make on a daily basis and this auction is just another way to continue our support.”

“It’s great to be a part of this project,” Adam Bonaldi, Vice President of Findlay Customs and Modern Muscle Las Vegas, said. “When you see big names like Barrett Jackson and the UFC coming together to make this possible for the Intrepid Fallen Hero’s fund, it’s important to mention all the smaller companies and individuals who helped along the way. I would like to say thank you to everyone who made this possible. It’s very rewarding to know the car will be crossing the block in just a couple of days as a culmination of many great companies along with tremendous individual efforts. I know whoever buys the car will not only be giving back to families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, but they will take home a piece of Automotive Art that will stand the test of time.”

The Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event runs from Sept. 23-Sept. 25 at the Mandalay Bay Resort. To become a bidder, visit www.Barrett-Jackson.com/bid.

Camaro still a topic of Oshawa controversy

Oshawa Mayor John Gray has been an easy target for opponents as he drives about town on government business in his distinctive, blazing orange Camaro.

The Oshawa-built car serves as a rolling endorsement and recognition of the importance of General Motors in Oshawa both currently and historically. And despite the sniping from opponents, primarily mayoralty challenger Louise Parkes, the mayor showed astute political instinct in having the City purchase the car. It symbolically underscores the deep relationship between the City of Oshawa and General Motors Corporation, provides visual reassurance here at home of the resurgence of the automaker and reflects Oshawa's primary economic contributor.

Opponents have spent a great deal of time in recent months demonizing the mayor for choosing to accept such a high-profile ride and making political hay over its seeming extravagance. Coun. Parkes, for example, says she'll auction off the vehicle and return the money to the reserve account in a bid to set a new tone of restraint in Oshawa.

Please.

If mayoralty challengers want to show fiscal restraint, they'll start by tackling issues of substance. They won't go off spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on collectibles as they did with the Cullen Miniatures (of which Coun. Parkes was a leading supporter) or strike ill-advised deals with charismatic theatre impresarios, or waste staff time -- and tax dollars -- exploring pie-in-the-sky CFL franchise relocations.

The notion that taxpayers will receive some benefit in an auction of the mayor's Camaro is disingenuous. Every single City councillor is given a $5,400 annual stipend they can use to lease or purchase vehicles. They mayor is given no such similar benefit. Over their four-year term of office, taxpayers pay $21,600 for each councillor. At the end of their term, councillors can continue to possess their taxpayer-subsidized automobile. Not so for the mayor.

Convertible is worth waiting for

GM expects the Camaro Convertible to be in showrooms by the end of the 2010 calendar year. Personally, this is the version we have been waiting for here at 5thgenblog.com. With MSRP expected to be $28-$40K depending on the performance and trim model you choose, this car should sell very well.

Car and Driver recently named the Camaro Convertible one of their top 25 cars worth waiting for in their May 2010 issue.

Chevrolet recently used their social media connections to release images of the convertible. See their page here to see more.
