Camaros are being built!

Word is Camaros have been ordered for Marketing purposes! They will be built in Australia and will be the cars you see in Brochures early on.
New Camaro updates have been slow and we haven't seen any test car pictures in a week or so. Hopefully this will change and we will see even more information as the summer progresses including some production interior and motor compartment shots.

Camaro is a 'Gotta have car'

Accoring to Motor Trend magazine, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is a Gotta have car!

Of the American Big Three's trio of "retro" ponycars-Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and Chevrolet Camaro-it's the still-forthcoming 2010 Chevy that's the four-wheeled Paris Hilton, the car swarmed by the loudest buzz and blinded by the most paparazzi strobes.

Sure, magazine covers exploded with Mustangs when Ford unveiled its sensational, fifth-generation model for 2005, but the Mustang, like the rotation of the earth, is a constant, a familiar face ever since its debut in 1964. And the new-for-2008 Challenger, a great-looking piece that conjures images of the iconic star car from 1971's "Vanishing Point," is inspired by a nameplate that served only eight interrupted years in production; compared with its two pony rivals, it's nearly a niche model.

This is a nice video, aside from the narrators obvious speculation about the SS or Z28 model designations.

The new Camaro in South Africa

Source: wheels24.co.za

Chevrolet's highly anticipated fifth generation Camaro is likely to reach South African roads after 2010.

Already well imbued in the subconscious of automotive enthusiasts, thanks to its clever product placement role in the movie Transformers last year, the seminal GM sport scar, the latest bow-tie muscle car is set to go on sale in the US next year.

Expanding markets

With export markets a key area of redressing growth and balancing domestic demand slowdown in the US, GM is keener than ever to convert as many of its models symmetrically to allow access to all markets.

Subsequently, previously ignored right-hand drive markets are now being specifically catered for.

Although the Camaro name might echo memories of large-capacity, unsophisticated V8s and widow-maker live-rear axle suspension set-ups, the latest model is thoroughly contemporary.

Its independent front and rear suspension features progressive-rate springs and gas-pressurised dampers. Styling takes its cue from a classic, the 1969 vintage Camaro, regarded as the purest of the esteemed line of cars which have carried the Camaro name.

Efficient V8s and a four?

Power will be from either a 6-litre V8 producing 300kW or an entry level 3.6-litre V6 worth 200kW. Ensuring environmental compliance, the large capacity V8 can run with only four cylinders operating during sedate driving, reducing emissions and consumption.

Performance is set to be within character for the legendary Camaro namesake. Expect a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than five seconds for the 6-litre V8 model.

The lighter 3.6-litre V6 engine is rumoured to endow the entry level Camaro model with near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, ensuring engaging driving dynamics. The engine is sourced from the acclaimed Cadillac CTS, although it has been detuned from the 225kW it produces in the Caddy to ensure better consumption in the Camaro application.

A four-cylinder contingency production plan is rumoured too, especially if fuel prices continue to escalate as current rates. The most probable candidate for this engine would be the 195kW 2-litre unit used in the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadster.

2006 Camaro Concept & Jay Leno

This video comes from 2006 and we dug it up on youtube - worth watching!
Jay Leno really knows his cars and has some good things to say about the Camaro Concept. Let's hope it holds true come first quarter 2009!

The miserly muscle car

The New Zealand Herald posted an article about the proposed four cylinder Camaro this week. There is some interesting Camaro pricing information as quoted below

'The Camaro is soon to go on sale in the US as a 2009 model, priced higher than the Mustang but "better equipped", says Lutz. The V6 Mustang coupe is priced from US$20,235 ($25,528). The V8 GT coupe begins at US$26,825'.

Also:

'Lutz says the lighter V6 gives the Camaro a nearly perfect 50-50 weight distribution. "With the V6, it is not a heavy car. The Camaro will be a lively and engaging car," he said'.
